Jamie D is one of the first friends that I made in San Francisco and one of my best ever. He's been living in North Carolina for a year, but THANK G is moving back soon. While he was visiting in May, he wanted to take me to dinner for my birthday (never-ending birthday!) and loves Japanese food, so we picked Chotto in the Marina. He's the perfect person to go to an izakaya restaurant with because they are drinking establishments, he used to live in Japan and he's just plain perfect. :)
Sake - Our Sake flights were the standout for me. I had only had Sake before in the form of Sake bombs, which I don't care for at all. I'm not the biggest beer drinker and the hot Sake doesn't make it any more enjoyable. My favorite of our flight was the Yaegaki Mu that tasted like juicy Asian pears. I'm happy that I now have an appreciate for Sake because it's the Japanese wine, and wine is my favorite thing anywhere.
Butta Belly Kushiyaki - Jamie orders pork belly whenever possible, but this skewer of just the meat with sea salt was wonderfully simple and tender.
Butterfish Crudo - Butterfish is a food trend that's popping up everywhere and I'm all for it. This dish was a big square of fish topped with lemon and a shaving of watermelon. Citrusy and fresh!
Gyoza - Potstickers are my jam.
Uni Hotate - This was my first bite of uni ever (see picture above). It was also my last.
Tori Matsu Kushiyaki - One time I saw a squirrel that had been hit by a car and all of its insides were next to it. This reminded me of that.
